It’s time for the body and some more major sawing skills. Please take your time when using your Band saw. An important thing to remember is to NEVER ATTEMPT SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU NERVOUS! Just like you wear a glove and a thumb protector you have to do as much as you can to prevent an accident!
You can see by the photo in this section that we’re moving pretty fast. The beading strips on the shirt and the chest piece and chocker are in place. I use a Fordum tool to add some texture to the fluff around the base of the feathers and also seperate the individual feathers. I carved 26 individual feathers on this bonnet. A real bonnet as a rule has 32. You can decrease the true amount a little and get away with it but be careful to not too few. Also, on the back side of the bonnet, note where the two sides of the feathers meet at the top. You want a complete feather to show in the middle on the front as is shown in the last two photos.
Things are getting interesting and with that a lot more fun. Don’t forget to do some research as you go along to learn about the various pieces of this carving. I think you really enjoy seeing how they’re really done and what they mean in the Native American culture.
Comments welcome.
