In this segment we construct the Shield and Spear shaft. To get things the way they should be you’re going to have to do some research. Get on the web and check out Native American war shields and spears. You will find photos of hundreds you can use when making yours. In my carving I shortened the shaft of the spear so it would fit the composition. Once I carved the spears shaft I positioned it on the back of the shield and with 2 wooden dowls, anchored it in place. DO NOT GLUE IT YET! You will have to separate these things when painting later on. In a later photo, I colored the back of the shaft with a graphite pencil so I could mark just where it fits on the shield. To attach it to the body of the figure I carved a notch across the chest plate to accommodate the shaft and then anchored it in place. You can see in the first photo of the chest piece where I used the pencil to mark the shafts location before cutting the groove. Lastly, I carved the spear point to resemble a chipped stone point. I glued this in place and then wrapped the shaft with some heavy thread to hold it in place.
In the next segment we will attach the braids and do some burning detail. Onward!
