For some strange reason I seem to have not made a Blog entry on the construction of this piece. Strange! Anyway, I’ll see if I can remember as much as I can about how it came to be.
As I usually do, I carve the head before moving on to other parts of the piece. Why? Well, as I will attach the head separately I can always carve another one if the first doesn’t measure up. In this case I knew I had a winner once I gave him a hat. As you can see in the photos below, once the main mass of the body was complete I moved on to the weapons involved. I wanted the hands holding both a flintlock pistol and rifle to heighten the drama of the piece. Judy photographed my hands in those poses to help with the carving details which turned out pretty good. I spent a lot of time making the weapons as detailed and accurate as I could. There is a video series on how I made the pistol.
Unfortunately, I was informed by the minds at Youtube years later that the little piston was detailed to the point that I received a “STRIKE” against my Youtube site due to their policy of not showing the construction of weapons. If you happen to received two Strikes you will incur some sort of penalty with the possibility of having your site taken off the net! A quick search of similar weapon videos show how to make actual firing pieces so how my little 4″ pistol made it into that group is beyond me. Odder still….they only deleted one part of a four part video series on making the pistol. The other 3 are still up and can be viewed. Here’s the first one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbPzYl_EBmw&t=843s&ab_channel=LynnO.Doughty
