It’s 4:00am! It’s still dark! He’s assigned first watch! The boss is pissed! His horse is Black! There are about 50 horses in the remuda! He’s got a problem! Well, the boy’s in the bunkhouse told that new hire that picking that pretty little jet black filly was not the best idea. I’ll bet he will make a better choice before the next cattle drive.
I love carving cowboys as there are just countless situations you can put them in. With this one, having him out in the early morning darkness holding up a kerosene lantern looking for his ride is an interesting one with the added fun of adding that lantern to the scene. The lantern was turned on my small, Jet lathe. I used a very small piece of 1/8″ dowel to make the fuel filler cap and metal wire for the wick control, glass globe retainer and handle. The two side vents were made from copper wire. Copper is easy to bend and I used a heavy gauge to get the size needed. Yes, it was a challenge getting everything to fit together but it makes a great detail.
I hope you like him. Comments welcome.
