Sometimes a Fella needs a little tune up. After noticing that the local senoritas were not paying attention like they used to in his younger years, El Escarabajo decided to iron out a few wrinkles to hopefully get back to his younger self. As I mentioned in Part 1 on this character, I really wasn’t satisfied with the rough look of his face. So, taking a deep breath I put him under and with a very sharp knife and a somewhat steady hand I carved away the eyes and the areas underneath. My largest worry in doing this was whether I could match the coloring considering that the carving has been sealed with a coat of Polyurethane varnish. Fortunately, it was an easy process and it turned out quite well. Here is a comparison of the before and after along with some additional views of the revamped piece.

Well I can’t say I didn’t like the first one, but he was a bit scary. Amazing what a few cuts can do to soften the demeanor. Went from psycho to just sinister. Great job as always.
This hombre is ready for the senoritas. I really like his face. Very reminiscent of the bad guys from the golden era of western movies. My favorite movie is the Good, the Bad, and, the Ugly.
That’s funny. You did a good job and removing the extra wrinkles and having everything blend in. I’ve often looked at some of my earlier carvings, in particular their faces, and wondered if I should “fix” them up a bit. I’ve been afraid that the painting would be difficult so I backed away from it. I suppose there’s something to be said about leaving the earlier carvings with your earlier capabilities as a carver. Maybe it reminds you that you’re improving. All the best in the new year.
nice thank you for sharing
He looks a lot better now, Lynn, you’re just a plastic surgeon. Not the money, but you have the skills, hahahaha.
