Digging deeper I found another very early carving. This one is a direct copy of Frederic Remington’s painting. I still have this piece but for some reason I don’t think I’ve ever shown it here. I think this one was also carved back in the late 70’s. Judy and I were living in Tulsa at the time. I remember that the horses body was carved from three 3/4″ stock laminated together and the wood was Arkansas basswood…extremely hard when compared to what’s available now. To mount the piece I used a thick piece of Redwood with a metal rod to elevate the figure from the mount. The Cowboy’s rope is twisted wire. The horse was about 12″ in length.
Comments welcome.
