Buffalo Hump

Buffalo Hump

A lot of these characters, Indians or Cowboys, were created before I started my first Google Blogspot site back in 2006.  Just the photos I took at the time.  I think I did post to the old Woodcarving Illustrated blog back then but that was lost long ago when they changed to the one they use now.   Too bad!   Those of us who were on that old carving blog had a lot of fun back then. We exchanged honest observations about each others work or woodcarving in general.  It’s a shame that kind of exchange is not so visible today.  There’s way too many Atta-Boys when the addition of a “but” attached to that phrase could have offered valued advice on how to improve one’s work.  The Caricature Carvers Face Book site is now the place where most meet.  I honestly think that if we could open up more the way we used to about our craft that site would improve dramatically.  Anyway……..

Buffalo Hump was carved back in the 90’s. He is a good example of my best work.   My skill in carving and painting was fully developed and most importantly my confidence was solid. I think my work was very popular as it was new and different from what was normal at the time.  I purposely made my pieces larger than the standard 8″ figure that others carved as I wanted them to stand out more when comparisons were made.  It was the old “Elephant in the Room” theory and it worked every time time I entered a piece in competition.  You might say I had reached my peak!  Carving was really FUN!  I only wish I still had a little bit of that old feeling these days!

Comments welcome.

I might be a little man in a big world but on our 30 acres I'm the one in charge when the wife's not around!
