Carving A Native American – Part 1

Carving A Native American – Part 1

With this new series we hope to show the progression of carving a Native American Plains Indian from the raw piece of wood to the finished and mounted figure.  As it will be an in-depth project, it will no doubt take a while to get to the end of it.

In this first video, I explain just how to lay out the head of the character, cut it out on the bandsaw, and carve it down to the head’s basic shape.  No details yet…. they will start to show up in the next one.  Right now it’s the basic shape we’re after.   In the photo below I is the tools used so far along with the most important……the carving glove and thumb guard.  DO NOT forget those. .Comments welcome as always and please post any questions about what we’re doing here vs. Youtube.  I’ll try and answer them the best I can.  If you haven’t subscribed to this Blog yet the Subscription block is over there on the right.  Please sign up.   The link for the first video is below.  Thanks

I might be a little man in a big world but on our 30 acres I'm the one in charge when the wife's not around!

Been a follower of your posts for some time but I stopped because they were coming into my computer in several foreign languages, so I stopped because I thought one or the other of us had been hacked.
I am an army Viet Nam era vet, 1968 to 1970 I just turned 80 and started carving a couple of years ago, after I moved from Bella Vista Arkansas back to Michigan. I couldn’t have kept this up if I hadn’t found you on YouTube, you have made it fun. Sorry to take up your time but just wanted to introduce myself and give you my appreciation for what you do and what you share.

I’m really looking forward to this video series. I appreciate your talking throughout your videos, Lynn, as your carving demonstrations, techniques, explanations, and tips are very helpful. Judy does a superb job in capturing it all as the camera operations director. 😃 Thank you both and Happy New Year!
