Carving a Saddle – Part 1

Carving a Saddle – Part 1

Here is a new pictorial guide demonstrating how to carve a small saddle.

While cutting out the block might appear hard to do, it is really quite easy.  Draw the design onto a piece of 3″ basswood.  Cut out the blank following the outer lines of the Saddle. To remove the inner area clamp the saddle in a vice and using a coping saw carefully follow the drawn lines on either end.

Once completed it can be easily mounted on a stand with a wooden dowel and a small block of wood.  I’ll show you how to do that in the following Blog post.  If you are pleased with this tutorial a small donation is always appreciated. Thank you.

Comments welcomed.

I might be a little man in a big world but on our 30 acres I'm the one in charge when the wife's not around!

Thanks for posting this. A small saddle for a caricature group is my next project. I already have a blank cut out using your carving a cowboy horse as the pattern. Yesterday I received a Timberwolf skip tooth band saw blade that you recommended in your cowboy in angora chaps video. Used it today to cut out a head and it is the best band saw blade I have ever used.
