The Wood Chopper

The Wood Chopper

This chilly wrangler has always been is one of my favorites.  Done quite a few years ago, he’s a great piece that tells a great story just by looking at him.  We know it’s cold by the snow on the ground, his rosey cheeks and very red nose.  Fortunately, he had a neckerchief that he could wrap around to protect his ears!  That Carhartt coat also gives him the protection and freedom he needs to chop and split the wood to keep the fires going whether out on the trail or back at the cabin.

I’ve posted both the raw and painted versions of the character  in the gallery and you can see how the head was accomplished. Looking at  those two photos today reminds me of the Marley character from the Christmas Carol! (I think I can hear some chains rattling!!)  I carved the ends of the scarf separately, leaving a doweled end so they could be inserted into the neck area of the piece.  The cut firewood is made from some twigs I picked up outside the shop and split. Two things I didn’t have to carve with this piece were the bottom of his legs and feet.  I’ll have to cover that technique a future post.

So, I hope you like him as much as I do.  We sure could have used him a few weeks back when the temps around here were down below zero.

As always, your comments are  welcome and appreciated.

I might be a little man in a big world but on our 30 acres I'm the one in charge when the wife's not around!
