Union Drummer Boy

Union Drummer Boy

Guilty as charged!  Yes….I have been shirking my duties of posting updates to this Blog.  Unfortunately, try as I might, I just can’t seem to find the time to set down and type something out.  With the post before this one of Sacajawea, I finally made it through the pre-digital photos of carvings.  I’m don’t think I’ve posted this one from my own collection but I’ll offer it with a weak pledge to try and be a little more timely with future posts.

The Union Drummer Boy was completed back in the late 90’s shortly after Judy and I had visited the Pea Ridge Battle Park in northeast Arkansas. Here’s the link:  https://www.nps.gov/peri/index.htm . Judy and I used to ride our horses across that battlefield years ago.  My Great Grandfather fought there during the Civil War.  He held the rank of a Fife player.   My plan was to carve a scene composed of him, the drummer, and the flag holder.  Sadly, that never happened.  I really enjoyed making the drum for this piece as it gave me a challenge of painting the emblem.  The drum is anchored to the body with a wooden dowel.  A great little piece.

Comments welcome.

I might be a little man in a big world but on our 30 acres I'm the one in charge when the wife's not around!

I like the movement with the marching, drum playing and turned head. There is alot going on in that piece. Are you still carving and if so do plan to make anymore videos?

I can almost hear the drum. The scene with the three would be great. Your work takes me back in history. Great work my friend.
